SMALL SCHOOL, BIG HEART, ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE!
Our Mission Statement
Miniota School will provide a safe and caring environment in which all students can grow academically, emotionally, and physically.
The students will increase vocabulary, descriptive writing, writing for a purpose and will increase their writing stamina
Staff utilized PD opportunities to further their understanding and strategies about writing at all the various levels and subject areas. Students received direct instruction and daily opportunities to practice their writing throughout the entire year. As the year progressed, students showed more competency and independence in their writing. This will be a multi-year goal and carried forward to next year.
The students will develop math facts and continue to work on number sense and problem solving
Mental math was part of daily instruction in our math classes, which helped create the common language and strategies throughout the building. The focus on showing various strategies to students so they could find one that works for them when understanding math problems, whether they were in rote or word problem format. There was a conscious effort by staff to teach place value since it is the foundation of many math skills in all grade levels. This is also a multi-year goal and will be carried forward to next year.
To revisit the school rules matrix/policy
Students and staff met numerous times over the year during Character Ed. to discuss the behaviour matrix, specifically the expectations in the different parts of the school. Older students had the opportunity to develop leadership skills by working with the younger students in these discussions.
Communication and Events
Communication to parents is done using a variety of methods:
> Class Dojo is the main form of communication. Each teacher has their own classroom set up
where they can connect with their specific parents but there is also a whole school group that
reaches everyone in the school. Dojo is used for highlighting things going on in the individual
rooms and in the whole school as well as an avenue for direct communication to individual
Parents.
> Email is used for large communications that would be too big for class dojo.
> Verbal communication through telephone or parent meetings
> Calendar of Events is sent home at the beginning of the year with the set dates for various
events in the school throughout the year. A monthly calendar is also emailed home showing the
events for each month.
